This book was touted as the ultimate manual for clear writing. Well, I do not want to argue with that statement. To me, however, the book seems outdated (e.g., the author insists on writing 'today' and 'tomorrow' with a hyphen), sometimes self-contradictory ("The subject of a sentence and the principle verb should not, as a rule, be separated...") and generally heavy ("If the writer finds that he has written a series of sentences of the type described, he should recast enough of them to remove the monotony, replacing them by simple sentences, by sentences of two clauses joined by..." plus 25 words to follow). Don't get me wrong, there is good advice there; yet, if you want to improve your writing, you could probably find something better.Whether you find Strunk's book useful or not, DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION (ISBN 9781682040133, reprint by Aloha Library)! It lacks proper formatting and is really a pain to read! The examples are not separated from the main text or from each other, words are inconsistently italicized, and the text is just a garbled mess. I'm sure one can find better editions of the book.
Ich habe mir dieses Buch gekauft, um meinen Kenntnisse der englischen Grammatik etwas zu verbessern. Dieses wurde mir von mehreren Leuten empfohlen. Inhaltlich ist das Buch auch wirklich gut, weil es die Regeln eigentlich sehr einleuchtend erklärt. Diese Kindle Variante hat aber schwere Formatierungsprobleme, die sich unter anderem in fehlenden Abständen äußern. Das Buch wird dadurch fast unlesbar. Da es eine kostenlose PDF-Variante gibt, die außerdem korrekt formatiert ist, würde ich allen empfehlen diese zu nutzen.
seriously this is the most relaxing book. it has beautiful illustrations and very nice very clear rules which i mostly agree with but just generally appreciate because they are clear and calm and so perfectly described. it's incredibly relaxing in this weird and upsetting world that we are currently living in. sometimes i get too into twitter, and i feel, you know, unwell. then i read a bit from the elements of style and i am transported into a lovely place where everyone chills on optimal sofas wearing nice sweaters, and everyone always uses the oxford comma.
Dieses Buch ist ein Standardwerk für jeden, der die englische Sprache perfekt verwenden möchte, aber auch für jeden, der sich mit einigen grundlegenden Regeln über das Schreiben vertraut machen möchte.Im ersten Teil des Buches geht es um generelle Schreibregeln, z.B. dass man nicht im Passiv formulieren sollte, keine überflüssigen Füllwörter verwenden sollte und dass konkrete Begriffe immer besser klingen als allgemeine.Dann folgt ein Kapitel über englische Wörter, die häufig falsch verwendet werden. Das dürfte vor allem für Angelistik-Studenten oder Leute, die die Sprache perfekt beherrschen möchten, interessanten sein, hier geht es an die Feinheiten.Das letzte Kapitel dieses etwas über 100 Seiten langen Büchleins dreht sich darum, wie man sich gut ausdrückt. Diese Regeln lassen sich im Prinzip auf jede Sprache übertragen, z.B. dass man sich klar ausdrücken sollte, nicht zu viel mit Adverben und Adjektiven hantieren sollte oder sich vor der Manieriertheit in Acht nehmen muss.

When I read comments about this book my expectation was to get very big manuscript about style with a lot of heavy theory about what and how to write in English better. When I received my parcel it was surprisingly small book in term of size and even more surprising in term of content.It is so rich of very concise and valuable advices and suggestions. No doubts, it is written by master. The way how it is written makes reading a pleasure. Even reading so "dry" by its nature subject it conveys a lot of insights about how we read, how ideas can be crisp, short and in the same time extremely powerful in bringing author's thoughts, ideas to someone he or she might not now about, who can be far away and in the same time can be touched by author's emotions. It touched me; I could feel the voice of the waves, heat of the sun and song of someone from the mountains. And each of these small stories was not more than couple of lines, but so rich, so powerful in its impact.Book has a lot of examples and suggestions, and how and when they are written you can feel, envision each small detail of the story told in these examples.
